In today's fast-moving digital environment, network operators face mounting pressure from surging bandwidth demands driven by cloud services, remote work, and enterprise digitalization. To address these scaling challenges while managing operational costs, the telecommunications industry is moving toward converged network architectures.

Cisco accelerates this shift with its Routed Optical Networking strategy, placing coherent DWDM optics directly into routing and switching platforms. By removing traditional external transponder systems, organizations achieve lower capital costs, lower power usage, and simplified operational workflows.

At the center of this transition are Cisco's 400G QSFP-DD coherent optical modules, offering high-density, energy-efficient solutions for long-haul and metro data center interconnects that streamline modern network operations.

Product overview

Cisco provides a complete portfolio of 400G QSFP-DD coherent transceivers tailored for diverse optical networking requirements. This product family includes three primary models: DP-400G-ZR-S, DP-400G-ZR+, and DP-400G-BR-ZR+.

The Cisco DP-400G-ZR-S complies strictly with OIF 400ZR standards. It is optimized for high-capacity, point-to-point Data Center Interconnect (DCI) links up to 120 kilometers, providing a cost-effective, pluggable solution directly from router ports.

For broader transmission reach, the Cisco DP-400G-ZR+ utilizes OpenZR+ specifications to service metro and regional optical networks. It supports multi-rate configurations, including 100G, 200G, 300G, and 400G speeds, using flexible modulation formats such as QPSK, 8QAM, and 16QAM.

The Cisco DP-400G-BR-ZR+ is a high-power "Bright" optical transceiver designed specifically for legacy optical networks. Delivering +1 dBm transmit output power, it seamlessly interfaces with existing ROADM infrastructure without requiring extra transponders or external optical amplification.

Features and benefits

  • Reduced Infrastructure Costs: Eliminates dedicated transponder hardware, significantly lowering equipment expenses and optical rack space usage.
  • High Transmit Output Power: The DP-400G-BR-ZR+ delivers +1 dBm output, allowing direct deployment into existing ROADM and optical systems.
  • Flexible Multi-Rate Operation: Supports 100G to 400G line rates to balance bandwidth needs and transmission reach effectively.
  • Open Standards Compatibility: Fully compliant with OIF 400ZR and OpenZR+ standards, ensuring seamless multi-vendor interoperability.
  • High-Density Form Factor: Compact QSFP-DD design maximizes switch and router port efficiency across enterprise and provider architectures.
  • Streamlined Network Management: Integrates directly into Cisco IOS XR, providing unified optical visibility, simplified monitoring, and telemetry.
  • Power Efficiency: Minimizes energy consumption per bit, driving down long-term operational costs and facility power requirements.

Cisco® QSFP-DD 400G ZR/ZR+ low-power coherent optical modules provide power savings in high-port-density switch/router platforms for 400 Gigabit Ethernet (400GE) traffic over amplified dense wave-division multiplexing (DWDM) links up to 120 km for 400ZR and over 1000 km for 400ZR+.

Product overview

Cisco QSFP-DD 400ZR/ZR+ low-power-consumption coherent optics modules provide power savings in high-port-density switch/router platforms for 400GE traffic over amplified DWDM links up to 120 km for 400ZR and over 1000 km for 400ZR+.

Leveraging CMOS and coherent technology innovations, Cisco 400GE-capable coherent optics can transmit a single wavelength of 400GE traffic directly from a router or switch port up to 120 km for 400ZR in a data center interconnect (DCI) application, or beyond 1000 km over an existing DWDM network with 400ZR+.

The 400ZR module leverages the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) Implementation Agreement requirements and is ideally positioned for single-span DCI applications. The 400ZR+ module leverages OpenZR+ Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) interoperable modes for high-performance interoperability and extends to distances beyond 400ZR’s capabilities. The 400ZR+ module is ideal for metro/regional data centers, service provider interconnects with Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) infrastructure, and AI scale-across applications in hyperscale networks.

The Cisco 400G QSFP-DD low-power-consumption coherent optics modules are mechanically compliant with the QSFP-DD MSA. The media interface is a duplex LC connector. Both C-band and L-band are supported.
